Two-factor authentication: What is it – and why do I need it?

This security authentication is provided by many online services, Two-factor authentication is an additional security service. In this authentication an extra security test include code from an SMS message, as well as a password. Nowadays it is very difficult for the user to remember lots of online passwords, and it can involve the variety among falling victim to cyber criminals and staying safe. This security service is added on many sites like Twitter, Google, LinkedIn and Dropbox and more. This security check is accepted by almost online service sites but Twitter and LinkedIn accepted this security service after a high-profile hacking.

Authentication in this security check may vary but normally it occupies either an automated SMS or an app which generates codes and after entering the provided password site will be asks for the password or in some sites an app is used to enter the code.

This security system is very safe than password protection that can able to keep away user from hacking and other types of online scams. But keep in mind that that it is not a ‘magic stick’ and hackers are trying to break this security system.

According to ESET Senior Research Fellow David Harley, “The sad fact is, static passwords are a superficially cheap but conceptually unsatisfactory solution to a very difficult problem, especially if they aren’t protected by supplementary techniques. One-time passwords and tokens are much more secure, especially when implemented in hardware as a two-factor authentication measure.”
